Why Buy LHG Rain Jacket?

Keeping dry in the rain while hiking is more than just a challenge.  You either get wet from the outside by the rain or you get wet from sweat from the inside.

Even though “waterproof breathable” jackets are a truly novel technology and work well in the laboratory, they just don’t seem to work in the field.  Dirt and dust from the trail will clog numerous pores in the external fabric, your pack and straps cover a significant portion jackets surface area preventing vapor transfer, and the rain drops also cover another large portion of the remaining surface of the jacket.  These “waterproof breathable” products require a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that washes off over time and use and must be renewed periodically to regain water repellency.  Most of these DWR coatings contain PFAS (often referred to as “forever chemicals”) and may contaminate groundwater.   These jackets will often wet-out over time.

LightHeart Gear’s ultra-light PFAS-free rain jackets are made from a permanently waterproof Polyester material with a Silicone coating on the outside and a polyurethane coating on the inside, which is purposefully non-breathable.  All of the seams are seam taped and the extra large pit-zips utilize waterproof zippers.  The generous pit-zips provide guaranteed breathability when necessary and also allow you to slip your arms out of them to essentially wear the garment as a vest when desired.  A roomy hood capable of having a hat or cap underneath and a small flexible brim help keep the rain off your face.

2xl runs slightly big, I’m 6’2” 300lbs and it’s baggy on me. The zipper catches on the inside material. It’s annoying but not enough for any deduction. It’s a very thin lightweight material. Time will tell if it’s durable.
I finally got a rainy day to wear the jacket, it’s not waterproof. There was water on the inside of the jacket, and my hoodie I was wearing underneath was wet. Extremely disappointed.

Very nice fully waterproof, lightweight rain jacket

Great for hiking - love the extra-large pit zips. The hood is large enough to fit over a baseball cap. Has two large inside pockets and two useful external pockets as well. Has elasticized and velcro-adjustable wrist enclosures. Its sealed seams block torrential rain. I wore this jacket while chainsawing limbs and clearing debris during hurricane Helena's all-day rain and wind storms. Couldn't use an umbrella - needed both hands free to work, and with the pit zips partly open I was able to stay reasonably dry without sweating excessively. Much more dependable than expensive breathable rain jackets that wet through when you need to be warm and dry on cold, wet days in the field. Perfect for shedding inclement weather while seated at a ball game. Comes with a nice small-size carry bag.
