Why Buy LHG Rain Jacket?

Keeping dry in the rain while hiking is more than just a challenge.  You either get wet from the outside by the rain or you get wet from sweat from the inside.

Even though “waterproof breathable” jackets are a truly novel technology and work well in the laboratory, they just don’t seem to work in the field.  Dirt and dust from the trail will clog numerous pores in the external fabric, your pack and straps cover a significant portion jackets surface area preventing vapor transfer, and the rain drops also cover another large portion of the remaining surface of the jacket.  These “waterproof breathable” products require a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that washes off over time and use and must be renewed periodically to regain water repellency.  Most of these DWR coatings contain PFAS (often referred to as “forever chemicals”) and may contaminate groundwater.   These jackets will often wet-out over time.

LightHeart Gear’s ultra-light PFAS-free rain jackets are made from a permanently waterproof Polyester material with a Silicone coating on the outside and a polyurethane coating on the inside, which is purposefully non-breathable.  All of the seams are seam taped and the extra large pit-zips utilize waterproof zippers.  The generous pit-zips provide guaranteed breathability when necessary and also allow you to slip your arms out of them to essentially wear the garment as a vest when desired.  A roomy hood capable of having a hat or cap underneath and a small flexible brim help keep the rain off your face.

Rain Jacket green apple xsmall

Very happy - perfect fit for a narrow person like me. Pit zips are a little stiff right under the arm pit but I imagine will soften up over time. I haven't had chance to try it in a heavy storm - I'm looking forward to that test.

Havent tested it out on the trail yet. But been getting s chance wear it in these summer pop up storms and works great. Love the under arm zippers for ventilation.

Mixed feelings

Love the pit zips and general functionality of this jacket! Wanted to give it 5* but the zipper keeps getting caught in the flap, which is really annoying.

And then a personal gripe - Despite using the size guide the arms come up really short on me and the hem rides up over my ass. Would probably need 2 sizes bigger to solve that, but actually it seems like the shoulders are cut too sloped for my body shape, or maybe it's my breasts that mess with it. Maybe I'm just a weird exception, but it could be that the size guide might do well with some adjusting... Or a version with longer arms could also be nice :)

Great except pit zips

Great jacket and pants. The pit zips are definitely not waterproof though. Otherwise very happy with these.

Useful in All Seasons & They Stand Behind USA Products

I had a version 1.0 rain jacket and used it as part of my all seasons weather system (e.g., wind and rainproof venting shell over the microgrid hoodie—their hoodie is also great!!—and other layers). I finally decided to hand wash per directions after some years of use—first wash ever—and the poly inside layer flaked off. I was just going to use Kiwi silicon Camp spray to renew the outside waterproofing and to see how it did in light rain and as a windbreaker, but I decided to contact LightHeart about the problem to see if I could do something better to renew the jacket as it was holding up great (because of their quality workmanship). LightHeart looked at the pics I sent and decided to send the version 2.0 jacket (the one available nowadays—with gasketed main and pit zippers) as a replacement!!! LightHeart Gear is an amazing company with solid USA MADE products that they stand behind. Wow. Just Wow. Loyal customer here for sure!!! Glad to see a company with solid standards and attention to detail!!!
